"Shifting Instinct” - January 21- March 4, 2022 - The Ekru Project

Cynthia Alberto approaches Discarded Looms as an exploration to better understand her relationship to consumption and wastefulness. At the center of Alberto’s weaving practice lies the principle that weaving acts as a conduit for new life and creation. These looms have been created out of discarded everyday packaging: some including an iphone case, axtoothpaste box, and egg containers. Alberto asserts her belief that anything can be used as a loom if we only shift our perspectives on what we deem valuable and useful. She became very interested in the “out of sight, out of mind” mentality that she caught herself participating in while online shopping and began to think about every individual step that is required to complete a purchase, including the creation of item packaging. Alberto shares that through the creation of Discarded Looms, her relationship to consumption has radically changed and she understands that everything can be functional and accessible if we look hard enough.
